Lending a Hand to a Local Hero

May 31st of 2013 was a day Houstonians will never forget- when a massive fire on Southwest Freeway took the lives of four brave firefighters and injured thirteen. Bill Dowling, also known as “Iron Bill”, was one of those injured firefighters. His heroic rescue attempt resulted in the loss of both his legs as well as brain damage.

After months of rehabilitation and close care, Bill is determined to regain his strength. He has been living up to his nickname by focusing on his daily exercises and therapy. With the help and support of his wife Jacki, he is slowly but surely on his way. His most recent motivation? His oldest son, Forrest, will be graduating from Marine Boot Camp in San Diego. Forrest will be soon achieving his dream of becoming a Marine just like his dad.

However, traveling to California will be a financial challenge for the family. That is why our community decided to step in and raise funds for Bill and Jacki to have their first vacation after his injury.

Let’s join in helping this local hero enjoy his son’s upcoming graduation.
